Tesco/Aldi price match

Options
We just purchased some French's classic yellow mustard 226g, from Tesco,Cardigan, price matched with Aldi at £1.49, great, we thought, as we were visiting Aldi straight after to complete our weekly shop.  Gutted to find Aldi's Bramwells American style mustard £1.49 is 290g !! Unless i'm missing something, this is a massive rip off by Tesco! How do they get away with it?

Its not a rip off as it not exactly comparing the same product anyway, thats the main issue here really.

Frenchs is not Tescos own brand. Personally its miles better than any of the own brands.

Trolley reckons the aldi mustard is 79p, are you sure it was £1.49?

They don't say aldi sell the French's mustard, but maybe they do, or did, and that's what's being matched?

I'm currently paying 89p for 325g from Sainsbury's for their own brand which is the same price per ml as 79p for 290g, so there's certainly many cheaper options out there.

I have seen French's in Aldi as an irregular item (cant remember how much I paid), although they do their own also.

FWIW, Tesco say they are price matching a different product - not "Bramwells American style mustard"

Tesco say they match "French's classic yellow mustard 226g"
with Aldi's "FRENCHS & FRANKS MUSTARD YELLOW 226g" which is £1.49

FRENCHS & FRANKS MUSTARD YELLOW doesn't seem to be on Aldi's website, but maybe it's available in some/all of their stores.

Maybe Tesco would argue that "Bramwells American style mustard" is a different and/or inferior product to "French's classic yellow mustard" - and "FRENCHS & FRANKS MUSTARD YELLOW" is a fairer match.

Here's a link to Tesco's list of matching Aldi products: https://digitalcontent.api.tesco.com/v2/media/ghs-mktg/88aac69f-990a-47e6-afec-c278153495a2/APM+Online+Verification+Form+28092024.pdf

  • They don't sell that in my Aldi, at least I couldn't find it, sounds a bit sharp to me. Thanks for the reply.

The only time I would use tesco's aldi price match would be if they were matching brand with brand, such as Heinz.  Anything else well maybe.  If it is an Aldi own brand then think very very carefully before buying another.
  • Definitely 1.49.

Sadly you can't always rely on Trolley

Yesterday I was looking for cheaper alternatives to Ryvita & it was showing Aldi's own version as an alternative. Yes, that would be fine except Aldi's own has not been available for many many  months: there isn't a space for it anymore!

  • Tesco seem to have ALL the bargains!!!

Until you realise their Aldi price match is actually a con.

Yes they DO price match. But what I have found is that they also RAISE their price to match Aldi.

Obviously relying on peoples gullibility to think they are getting a bargain.

    Is this legal?

    Of course it is legal.
They say price match to Aldi so if it is raised to match Aldi then they they are doing as claimed.
