Adding wife’s name to title deeds Scotland

We got married 1968. Bought land, built the house we’ve lived in since 1975. So it’s on the sasines register. No building has been on this land. Title deeds in my husband’s name. When we made wills about 8 yr ago, the lawyer talked us out getting my name added to title deeds. I enquired about it a few weeks ago and was told it would cost £1489. (Scottish system is more expensive and more difficult than in England I gather). I’m trying to see what we’d need to do to make this change ourselves. We have never had a mortgage. It seems, to me, a simple job to add my name to deeds, but reading material is a mine field. I was hoping it would just take a simple form, title deeds, proof of who we are etc. I was reading about a “love, favour and affection” option used when there is no money exchange. Has anyone got advice?

Is there a reason why you want to add your name? The law gives spouses a high degree of protection for the matrimonial home in the event of death or divorce, so there might be little to gain.

Though I don't understand what you mean by "No building has been on this land" - is that just a typo and you are talking about the matrimonial home? Or is this a different piece of land your husband owns?
  • The land we bought in 1973 now has our marital home built on it. We moved in 1975. I meant, prior to us building our house on the land, no other building has been there. It was part of next door house’s large side garden. (We both have our own entry/drive now). My husband and I, both want to Will our half share of the house to our children (leaving the other spouse with half ownership)  on our death, but at the moment, I legally can’t do that because my name is not in the deeds.
