If you have a working smart meter you don't even need the IHD plugged in for it to send the readings, it's done by the electric meter.

Yes I know.  But I find I do not trust them.  It is no good finding out several months along the line when you get an estimated bill, that things are not working as they should.  That is 3 million meters.  All because they buy cheap tat which we have to pay for, that lasts about half the time the old ones did so needs replacing a lot sooner.  Gives the fitter an extra chance to mess up the installation, well actually my solar connection to be precise.

I do not have a smart meter and do not want one as it appears there are many issues with them. Not the least that power can be turned off remotely!

Please could you list companies that offer good rates for those like me?

Out of interest, please let us know what the best deal is that you found based on not having a smart meter.

I can't believe anyone would exclude themselves from the significant savings that are to be had from allowing the devil's own meter into their home !!

True, but it’s good practise to take at least occasional readings for your own records anyway - otherwise how do you check that your bills are correct?

OP - currently, if you stop paying your bills, the energy company after a lot of efforts to contact you will get a warrant and force entry to your home where they will force-change your meter to a smart prepay one. If you had a smart meter, the same process  is followed with a major difference - no forced entry as it can be done remotely. The best tip so as not to face a remote disconnection with a smart meter is simply to pay your bills! (And engage with the energy company properly if either you are not able to do that, or they are under the impression that you are not doing that!)

I can easily check Octopus are actually receiving my half hourly readings just by checking the Octopus app where I can view the day, week, month or year usage. I also have an octopus mini which provides live reporting and making the IHD redundant.

I'm like you, prefer not to have smart meters and to send my own meter readings. They put a smart gas meter in at my house because the old one reached end of life and put in dumb mode so it acts like the old one, not smart.
From my experience, EDF and British Gas, and Tomato Energy (Electricity only and who are not that well known yet), you don't need smart meters on some of their tariffs so it's a case of checking quotes online on their sites.
Also, as others have mentioned, check comparison sites. In case there are one or two others that have recently come up that may offer something without smart meters.

Although the tariff may not require Smart meters, they require a meter and when older types reach end of life there are limited options.

Your smart gas meter is still smart - it just can't communicate because there is no comms hub to enable that. (Almost always, the comms hub is attached to the electricity meter). When the electricity meter also reaches end of life and is changed for a new one both meters should communicate as intended.
