Transferring whatsapp messages to new phone

I've just got a new Samsung and want to transfer all my whatsapp messages and contacts from my old Samsung.
Using google i found this https://faq.whatsapp.com/209942271778103/?cms_platform=android but when it got to the bit about scanning the QR code I hit a problem which was the phones couldn't locate each other and the new one said I had to connect to the internet even though both phones were connected to the internet via my home wifi. I tried restarting both phones and tried again but got the same problem.
My google search also produced a 2nd option of https://support.google.com/android/answer/14669513?hl=en-GB&co=GENIE.Platform=Android This requires you backing up all the chats to google drive. My chats are apparently 2GB in total so I don't think I have enough 'space' to do that as I keep on getting messages from google I'm nearly at capacity storage though I admit I don't really understand the concept much.
Any help appreciated

Every morning when I wake up I get a what's app message to say that it is backing up. Whenever I have got a new phone and logged in it has automatically downloaded the backed up messages.
When you get the new phone you could install it and see if it does automatically restore the messages - if it does then great, if not then start looking at how else you can do it.0 -
