Latest Daft Question- Can I buy any Thumbturn lock for bathroom door?

Options
Hi all.
Displaying ignorance once again.

I need a thumbturn lock on my bathroom (pocket) door (and my bedroom door- soon-to-be Foster parent, Social Services requirements!). There isn't a lock on it at present. Nor any holes where there ever was one in the door frame or door. Just a recessed circular 'handle' to open and close the doors with.

Can I just buy any thumbturn lock kit off Amazon or the like or do they come in different sizes that I should know about?
Thanks!

I've fitted three of these recently on doors with hinges, but you have a pocket door - which I presume is a sliding door so I strongly suspect this isn't any use actually.

I presume you'd need one with a kind of "hook" mechanism rather than just a bolt that comes out, which is what my link above takes you to, but the search term "thumbturn lock for sliding pocket door" seems to produce some locks that will do it although I presume the thumbturn needs to be flush with the door surface in the case of a pocket sliding door (as opposed to a conventional sliding door).

Something like this for the pocket door?

  • Perfect! Thanks, all!
Not knowing what to search for on the internet didn't help, and yes, silly me, a normal lock would indeed be useless if the door could still just be slid open as it doesn't swing outwards or inwards!
Never come across pocket doors before until I moved here, (upstairs rooms have them, better for wheelchair access when I hopefully get a wheelchair lift if I get a child who needs one!) so it's another world...
Will get 2 of those as presumably the handyman I'm roping in to fit them could just stick the handle part in the circular hole place where the current 'grab' handle is currently.

I don't think it's silly to not know things and I think it's so fab that you are going to be a foster parent x

  • Thanks so much! I have bought what I think are the right ones for these pocket doors now so will let the handyman worry about it!
A lot of safety things before a child can move in, inc paying out for gas and elec certificates, and a host of other things. Bit of a way to go yet, as have no pence so paying for things slowly, then Soc Services will pay for other things like stairgates and the like depending on the type of child!).
I so appreciate having this forum featuring people who have more of a clue than me!

Have you thought about joining the Priority Services Register if you are eligible,I believe you can get free gas safety checks if on register.
  • Thanks, will look into that, although I get the feeling they might not register my house before a character moves in, and the safety checks have to be done before that. But will figure it out during the time. Thanks!
Locks arrived today so just awaiting handyman to get back from holiday.

    Thanks again, all!

The Priority Service Register is limited to certain problems people may have. You may not qualify now but if this works out and you have younger children it's worth making a note of.
It's quite wide spread in it's effect and means if there's a fuel, water, telecoms problem you are a priority to get it sorted.
This is the basic idea but each provider including National Grid is involved.
And you can get through to a real person on a real phone and get issues sorted or questions answered.
Just like all of us used to in the old days :D
