    OP STOP!

This is a well known overpayment scam.

Report it immediately and take no action with your bank account. You may be pressured with increasing aggression by the other party. Ignore.

How did you sell it?  If through ebay or other sale window they will have a formal way for the buyer to request to cancel which they will need to follow.  Sending large sums of money to a stranger just because they ask is frequently a bad idea.
But a banker, engaged at enormous expense,
Had the whole of their cash in his care.

You could send them a refund and then they recall the original payment, leaving you £550 down.
    How would they recall payment?
If sale was made on eBay, if seller pays money back to the new bank account and then buyer asks for refund to eBay (who knows nothing about previous refund - and we don't even know it the same person).

Not sure about the rules in other places
I can understand ebay refunding the payment (so op's account will be in the red),  but how do they recall a payment once it enters OP's bank?
One way is for them to go to their bank and say they’ve been scammed.

    Questions:  How do you know
    1. The person requesting the refund is the same one you sold the item to?
    2. The account given in the refund request is the account that the £550 came from?

This has the hallmarks of a "Refund Scam".
Note the speed of asking for the refund & the appeal to your emotions, "his circumstances have changed".

If you sold via a "Market Place Platform" any refunds should be done through them. If the person you sold the item wants a refund by any other means, its very very likely to be a scam.

If you did not sell via a market place platform, then do nothing. If it is a scam then that £550 will disappear from your account.

If you do send the refund directly to the mentioned account do not be surprised if you end up £550 out of pocket.

I sold an item this morning, to be delivered Friday. 550 appeared in my bank account under transaction description automated credit. Purchaser has just messaged me his bank details and requested a refund as his circumstances have changed. Is this a bacs payment or another payment type? Am I right to delay the refund?
Why was delivery not till Friday ?

    So he could scam you?
