Quoted over £850 for work on 3 years old boiler (expansion vessel failed?)

I had my yearly boiler check and the engineer signed it off without further comments on the service record ("standard boiler service").
He told me he was recommending to replace the expansion vessel, and while I was at it also to look at a valve where some green liquid leaks (maybe a drop or two over a year, he initially said it wasn't worth doing it - then changed his mind considering it can be added on the other job).

The quote he sent says "filling lope not working; expansion vessel has failed; an inhibitor is required for heating system".
It's over £400 in parts and over £400 in labour (estimated 3 hours).

The service record says "max rate: CO 5.5 ppm and CO2 5.9%; min rate: CO 8 ppm and CO2 3.9%". The boiler is a Baxi Combi 600, it's basically 3-4 years old and I never had any problem with it.

Are they taking me for a ride here?

  • The boiler should still be under warranty as that boiler has a 7 year one, although it may not be valid if has not been serviced by a competent heating engineer or if it was never registered with Baxi soon within 30 days of it being commissioned.

As I purchased the house a year after the boiler was installed (the property had recently been renovated), it basically skipped one year of service checks and therefore it's not in warranty.

I just spoke to Baxi though, and they apparently offer a one-off repair fee of £417 including parts and labour, that's half the price of what the people who did my boiler check are quoting.

Those figures are waaaay off what they should be.
The CO2 I think should be around 9 on high and about 8.5 on low. Not sure why the CO is higher on low rate either. It needs set up correctly.
The parts are not £400 either, and I reckon I’d get that done in an 90 mins, although I can’t comment on whether it needs done without symptoms.
