Cashback Credit Card For Son

Hi,

My 23 year old son has just started his grad job and will be taking home around £2K per month.
He's living with us and has no debt or other credit card balances to pay off.

He has a Santander credit card that he setup during his 1 year student industrial placement but is looking at switching to a card that has some rewards in the form of cashback.

He will be paying the credit card balance off in full.

Any advice on which cards to go for bearing all this in mind?

Googling myself, I can see Amex has some good deals but have advised against this as I know from experience that Amex is not always accepted.

He just wants the one credit card.

Thanks

I've personally never had a problem with Amex being accepted, but I guess it depends on the sort of things he's likely to be putting on the card. The main disadvantage of Amex in terms of cashback I found is that if you don't put enough through the card by the anniversary date to have earned a certain amount of cashback then the whole cashback balance just got wiped.
  • Santander Edge credit card might be worth looking at - the £3 monthly fee is offset by up to £15 cashback in first year depending on how much he spends each month.
Having had a Santander card already it should help any application.

It would be better to have at least a a Visa and a MasterCard.  There can be network glitches and of course a card may be lost or stolen which can be a pain if you're travelling, so a having a spare kept separately is prudent.
At least one card should be fee free abroad.
I suggest getting Barclaycard Rewards because there's no foreign loading or transaction fees and also no cash advance fees if repaid in full by the statement date which is a very rare feature.  (Local ATMs may charge, but cashback at store checkouts can be a workaround.)  There's also 0.25% cashback.  It's Visa, so it covers all the bases.
  • if it is a Santander Zero card, possibly better off holding on to that.

If I've read the OP's question correctly I suspect it's a cashback or rewards card that the son is interested in ?
Not sure if Santander would have issued a Zero card to a student before it was pulled in 2021 ?
Worth keeping though, as you say, if it is.
