British gas standing charges!

Moved to a property that I can't use gas, the gas meter is caped. British gas wants me to pay standing charge for the meter that cannot be used, when I asked for it to be removed they said I would have to pay for the removal £2000.

How can they charge for a service that I'm not getting and can't get. I'm on the second floor and we are forbidden to have gas in the property.

Does anyone know what can I do to avoid this charge? How can they send me a bill for a non existent service?

TIA

who has forbidden you to have gas?
  • Bottom line: if there is have a viable supply to a meter, standing charge is payable.

Requesting your gas meter to be capped

If you have electric heating and cooking installed in your home, and have no existing or future use for gas supply to your home, your gas meter can be capped, in doing this you will no longer need to pay a standing charge for maintaining the gas connection but you will still need to pay standing charge for your electric meter. To arrange for your meter to be capped, follow the steps:

It really is not that simple.  The Gas Act has some horribly ambiguous wording.  So far, nobody on this forum has ever found any clear case law on what it actually means. https://www.legislation.gov.uk/ukpga/1986/44/schedule/2B
Ofgem's published opinion is that anyone who has never actually used any gas should not be paying a standing charge.
      If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.
