Builders who seemingly ride horses........

I hope this is the correct section, I'm after some advice for a friend (she has no idea I'm on here).
I don't have a huge amount of info but here goes.
My friends' Mom has employed some builders over the summer to rebuild/renovate her kitchen, I can't say for certain where she found them from but they are supposedly 'reputable'.
Anyway, its taking forever. 3 months at the moment.
The builders come as and when they like (in other words rarely) with no communication, their attitude is openly hostile (one in particular) and the standard of work isn't good either.
Obviously once a certain amount of money has been paid to them you have a choice whether to start again but incur losses or just see it out.
But is there anything legal that can be done? I'll find out more if I can but my friend is VERY private so doubt I'll grt anywhere. I just know the cowboy like (lack of) service is causing great stress.

Does she have a proper written contract and work schedule for the job? That should be the starting point. If they're not adhering to the contract and schedule then she should begin formalising the complaint.
- How has she paid them?
- Does she know who she's contracted with, i.e. is it a person, a business?
- Has she got a registered address for the contractor?
