When clicking on a link it goes to the side bar

This is driving me crazy. Mac air early 2015 hard disk was wipe out by computer shop as could not log in. Found out it was due to faulty key pad. I have connected an external keyboard so that I can log in to internet as old Mac type only in capital letters. Thought have sorted the issues but now every time I click on a link it goes to the side bar and have to click again to open. Can anybody help, what am I doing wrong. Going to take it back to computer to see whether the keyboards can be fixed. Not sure whether it is worth repairing an old Mac. Thanks
