DO NOT, I repeat do not apply to work for this company unless you are willing to do work paying sometimes quite a lot of up front costs and are happy to be out of pocket for three months or more.

I mystery shop, sometimes it can be fun but if you want to make any decent money I would look elsewhere. There are perks to it of course otherwise people wouldn't do it, but it is much much harder than people think. Most companies fees are quite low with some paying better but expecting a lot more work for it, also there are lots of new shoppers so more people competing for work and so fees have been driven down even lower and of course there is less work around as well. But to those who want to work in mystery shopping good luck oh and my tip is get a big overdraft to cover your out of pocket expenses until you get paid the following month or perhaps have a float for expenses. ;)

I do some mystery shopping, and am keeping spreadsheets for the tax man. One query though - how does the tax man treat the 'free' meals for which you get reimbursed? I don't mind being taxed a bit on some meals I enjoy, but sometimes if I'm passing anyway I mystery shop burgers - I only take a bite and leave the rest!
Ex board guide. Signature now changed (if you know, you know).
  • Anyone care to post a list of companies who are slow or bad payers? I'm currently working for a quite a few now (since I saw Becles' thread). I was paid very quickly by Optimum Contact. I'm awaiting payment from Retail Eyes and Gapbuster, and am about to do a couple of shops for Field Facts. Also did some work for PCP (market research). I'm awaiting assignments from NOP, Retail Maxim, GRG and TNS, having just been taken on their respective books.
In a rut? Can't get out? Don't know why?
It's time to make that change.

Gapbuster pay around the 25th of the following month - eg all assignments completed in August will be paid around Sept 25th.

Retail Eyes can be quite slow. They normally issue cheques around the 15th of the month, but don't appear to post them out promptly.

NOP pay every 2 week, so at most you are waiting 3 weeks for your money. Retail Maxim pay once a month and GRG pay between 2-4 weeks after completing the assignment.
Here I go again on my own....

To be honest most companies are good payers although they all pay at different times etc.

Myusernamestaken - The two companies that I know many people have had problems with are:

Peartree - avoid avoid avoid avoid avoid!!!
    and McPhersons.

  • MacPherson are now trading under different names so you might want to avoid 'Mysterium' and also '24-7MysteryShopping' - the latter's website (http://www.24-7mysteryshopping.co.uk/) makes interesting reading!
