Universal Credit & Selling Prints

I sold some prints online for a few months to earn some extra money so I could save/buy an expensive item. Will this impact on my universal credit? It isn’t a job, it was just a hobby and a way of earning a little extra.

  • Did you make the prints shortly before selling, or were they something you already owned / made ages ago and literally just sold off to fund the item you wanted to buy?

    What is the hobby?

    Making prints to sell?
  • Old artwork that I sold off.
Sold a few prints in $ on a website nothing more than $20. Haven’t made over £400 across 4 months. Just sold them to fund an item I wanted to buy.

If it's old stuff and wasn't made to be sold then it would be classed as a personal possession, so selling them off is fine.
The normal capital limits still apply.

    Thank you!
    Whats the capital limits?
With UC the lower limit is £6,000 the higher limit is £16,000. Between the two limits a deduction is made, over higher limit UC stops & under lower limit nothing happens.

    Are you sure?

Someone on Facebook said I should’ve declared as self employed and told hmrc and universal credit. Now I’m worried.

not the most reliable source of information to put it mildly. As others here have said, if you are just selling items you already have, decluttering if you like, putting the proceeds towards buying something new for yourself then these are just personal items, there is no trading going on.

If however these are things you've bought or made with the intention of selling for a profit then that changes things.

If your total imcome for the year from selling the prints is  not more than £1000 then you do not need to register as self employed  with HMRC.
