Getting a new phone for 2 apps to play with is not a goer. I need it for nothing else and need a new car, new laptop and new tablet! Somethings got to give.
I'll make some enquiries as you can bypass and download another operating system though that is beyond me I'll see if I have access to someone tech savey before I give it to the local recycling. They take old phone and redo them to pass to those in need.
But thanks for letting me know that it's not just a case of a battery. Shame. It will also make me aware of something I didn't know when looking for another second hand phone.
I found a shop with the Samsung J series for £100 brand new and boxed. But it seems that it uses Android 4.4. 4 "KitKat and that is not going to be supported :/

Why do you need both a laptop and a tablet? Could you buy a new/refurbished phone instead of a tablet?

    I  have a phone, a laptop and a kindle. I don't really know what I'd use a tablet for, that the phone/laptop/kindle wouldn't do.

A kindle is a tablet? Unless you just have an ereader one.
Mine is an ereader, not a tablet.
  • I have an old Samsung S4 mini floating around in a cupboard somewhere. The batteries are removable in these older models, and are very cheap to buy replacements. All you need to do is remove the back cover (it clips on and off) and gently remove it. Definitely not worth paying someone else to do it for you.

The points above about device support are also worth considering, and depending on what you ultimately use it for you might find you need a more modern phone. But if you just want to use it as an actual phone (calls, SMS, etc) then it will probably be okay until they turn off 3G/4G mobile signals.

If you are happy with your laptop and just worry about losing stuff, backing up the contents onto an external drive would be a cheaper solution.

I have an old S3 mini.
It will not work on 4G, it will probably still make calls and texts on 2G - if you can get a working SIM that will connect to 2G. (3G has mostly shutdown now).
I have no SIM card in that old S3 mini so it can't make calls/ texts but I do still use it on the internet by wifi now and again to surf the web.

Yes Newcad, that's what I bought it for second hand. Podcasts, radio and such in the garden and garage using wifi. But I have an old kindle (£25) that I can use for that. The battery in the S3 has definitely gone. I could get a new battery but Playstore won't work he said because of the old Android.
It would have been ideal to carry in pocket for just identifying birds and stars, maybe a milometer. None is essential, just toys that would give me occasional pleasure.

Looking into Android and such they are geared to only last 4yrs even updated so as someone said, the usual built in oblesence
There is a new smallish Samsung phone in Argos for £60+ but again Android also already with only 3yrs left if I trust that. But perhaps I'll be fed up with the id progs by then.

I'm thinking on all that's been said and if it's worth pfaffing about.
Kim, yes, it's on the list to get an external hard drive. Again about £60 and so it goes on. MSE can be darned hard work these days :)

Well if you want to stray out of range of your wifi then you are going to need something with 4G/5G.
If you are only ever going to use it on wifi than it doesn't matter, like I say you don't even need a SIM in it for cnnecting to wifi.
As for a new battery - It didn't take much searching at all to find new batteries for an S3 mini, including original Samsung batteries: https://www.amazon.co.uk/samsung-s3-mini-battery/s?k=samsung+s3+mini+battery
Alternatively, as long as the current battery isn't totally dead (or missing) then you could connect a power bank to the phones charging port and run it off the power bank.
Not sure why you would want/need the the Playstore? OK you probably won't get an Android v4.1.# compatible app there now, but just use the apps and browser already on the phone.
If you do need apps or a browser then you can also still get old Android version compatible apps as "APK's" from places other than the Playstore.

That is changing, Google now guarantee at least 7 years, Samsung are now matching that for some phones. Others like Motorola are still lagging behind and can be as low a 2-3 years.

As for using such an old phone. There are exploited vulnerabilities in the SMS app and the standard web browser from that generation. It is the phone equivalent of putting an Windows 98 PC on the internet these days.

Consign it to being re-cycled and replace it if you want to have it for more than just making / receiving calls.

I'm on a Pixel 8 and DH has a fairphone 5 for these models Android is expected to be available for 8-10 years.  Before that I had a Samsung Galaxy S8 which  I got 6 years out of - it got replaced as security updates were no longer available, and the (non user replaceable) battery was on its way out.

Motorola have only committed to updates for one phone. Recently, others have been getting one major upgrade (usually delayed) and occasional security updates. Really not a good buy at all.

Wow thanks folks! That's a learning curve but interesting. And thanks for all the info I wouldn't know.
I've never wanted or used specific Apps before but I'm kept around home with an injury I can't get rid off - yet so need would like some things to play with. But so few and at what cost so I'll have a look at some things suggested over the next few days.

I'm going to our local Repair Shop this Saturday. I'll give them my phone - probably.

Newcad the phone has never had a sim and I used my wifi but granted it wasn't playing ball recently.
"you can also still get old Android version compatible apps as "APK's" from places other than the Playstore." I've been told that you can only get apps from Playstore, so that's a revelation :o
Maybe worth giving that a go with a battery. I thought it would be a good idea to be able to play with the apps, learn about them and I'd like and see if I will find a good use for them before buying a new phone.
