BMW 2012 M3 with the V8 engine. How reliable is this engine?

As the title says, how reliable is the V8 S65 engine and how does it compare to the successor, inline 6 twin turbo S55 engine in terms of reliability?

I’ve heard many stories of blown head gaskets in Renault engines, Ford eco boost engines and various Vauxhall engines but none on the S54/S65 engines?

in terms of money saving, is the S55 or s65 the way to go for long term reliability?

Cars of this nature tend to be driven hard.
Nothing about running an M3 is money saving.

The new M3 uses the same engine block as the older M3 S55 engine, so in terms of reliability it should be good and probably more durable than the Kia Picanto engine.

Haven’t decided myself, I may look to PX my Volvo with the C63 AMG from the single mother who has inherited it. In terms of money saving, I can’t see the C63 AMG going down in value, if anything it may creep up. The engine is that car is also bullet proof it seems, so long term reliability should be good.

Given that the OP has several options with regard to cars and, in the meantime, has cars that are functional, it might well be prudent for the OP to wait until they have completed their house purchase before considering changing cars.

There are always unexpected costs involved in moving house, so keeping any spare cash available for any needs that arise in relation to the house seems sensible.  Once settled in, the OP can review their needs and available budget and select suitable car(s) to meet their needs and wants within those constraints.
There may even be an old 3-series plus a Transit to consider once the house purchase has completed.

Yes, they could gather them all up - the Volvo diesel, the F82 M4, the Yaris, the single mum's C63 (assuming the current owner is deceased by then), these two cars they've got free with their new house.  Gather them all up, trade them in against an M3 V8, drive it a month, then sell it when it needs a new rear tyre.  Like they did with the Porsche 911.
