Spanish Passport control/Entering Spain with a debt

Options
I have just discovered that I have accrued a Spanish Traffico car road tax debt (equivalent to that of the UK DVLA road tax)
Although I followed the procedure and de-registered the car as soon as I got back in to the UK in 2011 and have all of the documentation to prove I carried this out. However, what I really need to know is would I get stopped at Spanish Passport control if I choose to go back to Spain for a visit ?

It's unlikely that their systems are that well linked although why not try and sort it out beforehand?

With the work going in to EES currently, it would by fairly trivial to link such systems up

Maybe look up Jamie Lee Fielding. I would agree with trying to get it sorted out before going, or ensure that you have all the relevant paperwork/evidence with you.
I don't care about your first world problems; I have enough of my own!
  • Could the Spanish Embassy in London help you contact the relevant authority to expidite this problem conveniently ?
The last thing you want at a point of entry to Spain is a mini drama connected to this matter, unlikely as it might be.

Thanks  for  replies, can't speak  to a human at the embassy, Traffico the DVLA equivalent  in Spain are unapproachable  unless you live in Spain.  I have  all original documents  to confirm  the car was completely de-registeredin the UK. DVLA  have been very much the same, constantly  chasing but getting nowhere.
I basically need to be confident  that my passport wouldn't trigger a debt when arriving into a Spanish airport

Simple solution: arrive at an airport in Portugal (eg Faro) and take surface transport into Spain.

Once you are there, find a way to resolve the problem with Trafico.

Is that a practical option for the OP unless he plans to visit south west Spain ?

There's always northern Portugal for access to the north west, or southern France for the north east.

There are many affordable flights to Faro from different British airports, while there is a frequent bus link from Faro airport to mainline Spanish railway stations in Huelva and Sevilla. Spanish trains are rapid and affordable, so from these stations you can get to Madrid in a couple of hours for about £15 or less.

Obviously if the OP is heading for northern Spain it would be more convenient to fly into somewhere like Bordeaux or Porto... or any Schengen airport and then another flight to the final destination in Spain. (Although officials probably know more about people arriving on flights than on trains.)
  • Thanks again for your help, however just to be very clear all I need to know is simply if the debt (which as I have explained is totally unjustified) would trigger a notification at Passport control in anyway? I have no desire to enter Spain any other way as I really have nothing to hide and would rather not encounter any trouble. Thanks again in advance
