crunching sound when engaging reverse gear

hi,

advice/info needed.

sometimes when i try and engage reverse gear in my ford fiesta, it crunches. it does get into reverse but the crunching sound sounds shocking. has any body had the same/similar experience, and does anyone have any advice? it doesn't occur all the time though.

  • check your brake and clutch fluid, top up if requiered.
if this doesnt help then you clutch is probably on its way out, does the car kind of jump when you eventually engage reverse? if so then i would almost garauntee its the clutch needing replaced.

    I second the clutch.
Does it still crunch if you put you clutch down in neutral, lift clutch up still in neutral, put down and select reverse.
  • i've actually just replaced the clutch a few days ago. it's actually been going on since i bought the car used a few months ago.

some forums say that this crunching sound happens on some fiesta models.

some stuff i looked up online said that when stationary, i should clutch and engage first gear, then clutch again before engaging reverse. i tried it and it didn't crunch. hopefully it will work in the future.

i am kinda !!!!ed off if there is a problem with the clutch oils and the guy didn't check the darn thing when he changed it.
  • its maybe some air in the fluid.see if it can be bled.

  • i've been doing a fair bit of internet searching regarding this thingy. hopefully it's nothing expensive. i'm not a dab hand at mechanics so i'll probably leave it till the next time i see the clutch place where it was recently replaced. i'll try and get them to do it for free.

If it was recently replaced it should be rectified for free under the Sale of Goods Act - don't be pushed into paying anything if it's a result of their shortfall (further details here) :)

(going to check my clutch fluid because I sometimes hear a crunch when engaging reverse :o)

May be a silly question but is your clutch depressed right to the floor, and its not stuck on carpet or anything, it does sound like the clutch is biting a bit to much.
My sister fial scentio has done this all the time shes had it so maybe itis just a normal thing :S

How can there be a problem with the clutch fluid when it's a cable operated clutch?
I assume there's plenty of oil in the gearbox?

If it works fine when you try it a second time, the chances are you're not letting the revs drop enough before trying to engage it. The fact it's silent the second time suggests no problem.

Could it be a worn gear linkage?

because not all fiestas are cable operated thats why.
newer fiestas (zetec engine and newer) have hydraulic operated clutches.
