O2 debt from old Virgin Media Sim Card

I am looking for help as I am at the end of my tether ...

I had a free sim card with Virgin Media. In Sept 23 they migrated my Sim card to O2 and set up a new contract. I cancelled the contract but have been left with a debt of £20.
O2 have no record of my account number or the mobile number that was migrated. I have sent them 2 cheques, neither have been cashed. I have been phoning O2 and Virgin Media for 6 months to try and pay this amount but no-one can help me.

My credit file is now showing in default and it is affecting my credit score and my ability to get credit or renew my mortgage.

I don't know what else to do. Hopefully this is the right thread to post this on. Has anyone else had a similar experience?

Any help would be gratefully received.

Thanks

Steve

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.
