Rent income on deceased mothers property

My wife is renting out her deceased mother’s house with the rental income going to the local council to reduce large outstanding care home fees. I am the executor and am not sure who should declare the income, my wife via self assessment or the late mother’s estate. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your were advised back in January 2021, when MIL was still in the care home, that she was the landlord, not your wife.

That advice hasn't changed, and won't change until the property is transferred to your wife's name, if that's what she wants.

What prevents you doing that?
