Can I freeze swede

I bought half a swede 3 days ago and I have just noticed that it is out of date today could it be cubed and frozen?

Would I need to cook it first?

Thanks :)

I always buy swede when it's reduced because it lasts so long. I wouldn't bother freezing it. After you have used some, the cut side will dry out a bit, but when you slice that bit off it will be fine underneath.

  • I've never understood why things like swede have use by dates on -well, of course they don't inless they've been shrinkwrapped  Rest assured you will know when it is past its best -it will be all shrivelled and wrinkly. It will be harmless unless it develops mould. All root veg store well ;)
  • Thanks..I will leave it has it is then and hopefully it will still be edible on new years day and I will roast it :)

Not everything is past its best because it all shriveled and wrinkly.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

  • Hi

I usually cook mine and mash it (usually with some carrots) and then freeze it. It make a handy veg to have in the freezer as you can put it in the oven and heat it up from frozen.

    Hope this helps!

I cooked some swede and then mashed it. Can i now freeze it? Will it taste OK after it has defrosted?

Yes! If in doubt, add a bit more butter and a good grind of black pepper!

  • Certainly can ! also mashed swede and carrot can be frozen and pretty much any cooked root veg. I hadn't noticed the taste suffering, and as purpleivy said, you can always pep the taste up a bit - or add it to a casserole or soup :)

It's better if you can get as much water out of it as you can before mashing. You can make this up if it looks too dry with cream, butter etc
