Want to extend attic hatch

Hi,

I would like to extend my loft hatch as it’s only a foot wide. I have a standard truss roof and I’ve taken a photo shown below.

I fear this won’t be possible without significant roof structure alterations as the hatch is nestled between the beams.

Does anyone know the possibilities here?

Thanks

  • Not a big job. A local carpenter or builder should be able to do this for you. Have a look on YouTube for videos of it being done so you have an idea when asking for quotes

  • That's a structural alteration. Building regulations approval would be needed. It's a big job. Needs a structural engineer. Actually, I wouldn't do it.

    Agreed

I would remove the 2 side strips and have a bigger cover

Gives you a couple of inches extra at little cost

Yeah I thought as much - I know truss roofs are not designed to be altered in any way unless you’re willing to spend ££££ just to store more crap in your life… I will definitely look at gaining an inch or 2 (with the hatch door and not my waist)

I used a Manthorpe GL260 hatch to replace the draughty old one I had here. Needs 562mm between the joists. You need to get a tape out and measure the exact distance, and go from there..
While you are up in the loft, take the opportunity to put another 170-200mm of insulation down. The extra thickness will help to reduce heat loss slightly and perhaps increase your EPC score by a point or two.
