Id requirements for DVLA

I paid my road tax online after getting a 'last chance' letter. I then thought I would set up an online account to ensure I didn't forget to pay next year. Unfortunately I couldn't as I didn't have a valid form of id for them. Valid ids are:
- UK Passport (or expired within 12 months)
- Non-UK Passport
- Non-UK Passport
- Biometric Residence Card (BRC)
- Biometric Residence Permit (BRP)
- National Identity Card
I have no idea what the last 3 are, but maybe I should get one??
I tried the online chat (& found that my V11 letter must have been lost in the post). To use the chat I had to give my reg number, car make/model/colour, full name & address, date of birth.
My rant/warning or whatever is that I couldn't get my issue logged as a concern, as the system was not in error, and that driving licence number is not accepted as a form of id (as it is elsewhere). I'm sure I'm not the only person who has no passport!
In addition, I tried to pay via my debit card & was referred to my bank's mobile app (which I don't use) for verification, I used a credit card instead, with no problem.
I'm not completely computer-illiterate, but i think older folks are getting left behind. I'm beginning to feel that perhaps I don't exist any more - in spite of having a gov.uk account of some sort........

The last three are things for non British citizens to use.
Do they not offer any alternatives because I don’t remember having to show any id when I set mine up?Although to be fair, I do have the memory of a goldfish.
I’m not sure if the lack of photo ID is an old age thing though. It is something a lot of retired folks do have. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.1 -
Surprised that a driving licence isn’t accepted although in fairness you don’t need one in order to be a registered keeper0

that old people are being left behind. This sort of ageism is a big problem, it happens so often that even some of us older persons begin to believe it.Technology phobia or not being savvy with technology affects all ages. There’s a lot of work been done on this. This sort of belief stigmatises both older people and younger people who struggle.Rant over.2 -
The easy way to avoid letting your vehicle tax lapse is to pay by Direct Debit. The digital Driver and Vehicles Account launched a year ago and functionality is still being improved. You currently can’t set it up without a passport, but since it’s not mandatory to have this account maybe there never will be an alternative option? The DV Account can be used to manage driving licence renewal, so ID verification has to be something different.
Creating workarounds for people who choose not to have a secure form of ID just makes systems insecure. So long as there is a non-digital way to do the same thing those individuals aren’t excluded.0 -
As mentioned, just set up a direct debit to pay it automatically. You don't need an account to do that.

If you were prompted to use your banks app when paying with debit card I suggest you contact your bank as the authorisation in the app is triggered by settings the bank set up.0

Thanks for all the comments, everyone.
For info., I am 'older' ie getting my state pension, & my secure photo id is my driving licence 😕

Not at pension age yet and no photo ID here either. I have a paper licence and that's good enough for me. I think only Revolut
asked for photo ID but just kept repeating that when I said I have none..
Their answer to NO PHOTO ID is no problem just send us a copy of your passport!!! They were useless and I just said enough just
close the account, I don't know if it was a language barrier or they were following a script and just kept moving from line 1 and line 2
and didn't know what to do when neither of those applied so just kept repeating them both.
It was certainly not worth the hassle for the few times I used it to buy something in euro's. Not buying a photocard licence saved me more.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...1 -
You don’t get a choice though if you move house or need to send back/renew your license for any other reason. All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
