UK bank account for depositing Euro notes (cash) - without converting to GBP

Hi,
I would like you to advise a UK bank account that allows me to deposit Euro notes (read: cash) in UK bank account without having to convert them into GBP

  • I've paid euros over the counter into an HSBC Euro Currency account, I believe you can do the same with the equivalent Barclays account too.

As above, probably you'll need to open their normal GBP current account before opening a euro currency account.
    Evolution, not revolution
  • Lloyds used to refuse this - you had to get a flight or ferry to IOM to deposit them.

But Lloyds doesn't offer UK-based accounts in Euro's. I have never had such problems with HSBC, though, even before they introduced Global Money.

Out of interest, what is the process for this?

For instance, do HSBC provide a card or pay in book, or do you quote your account details at the counter etc

From memory I put my debit card & pin in the terminal to identify myself, and they pulled up my other accounts to get the details. I don't have a paying in book, in fact, the only paperwork I have is a monthly statement that I can't seem to switch to paperless. The one thing to bear in mind is you can transact with this account in online banking but for whatever reason it doesn't work in the app (the exact opposite of HSBC Global Money).

Exactly which HSBC account, which branch, and how much were you trying to deposit?

Not every HSBC branch offers services to take foreign notes.

You open a currency account with HSBC, it does provide a hard search to your credit file. You take your notes and take it to a branch that does accept it. Hand over debit card and they fill out some paper and process a buy order. (You are selling to HSBC and they buy from you). You have to sign and date a piece of paper, they count the money and get you to confirm its the right amount and 5 min later you are with a transaction receipt out the door and funds are showing in the currency account. They don't take coins.

Currency account transactions in Euro are free for everyone and other currencies e.g. USD are coming with transaction charges unless you are Premier where it is all free.
