I am looking to get excused from duty duty due to mental health and the court asked for a medical summary or letter. The doctor keeps delaying it saying urgent and now blaming admin issues. I only have 7 days to respond any advice?

    1. It's JURY duty

    2. Keep contacting the practice.
  • So I was told by 4.30 today this medical summary would be ready for me as they were doing admin work. Arrived there no summary come back to tomorrow same all week. I have now raised a complaint by email as I asked where I can complain? I believe my local hospital also has a number I can phone to complain to. What else can I do? I assumed a summary as within my rights to get?
  • Well I won’t disclose what mental health issues I have but I take medication for them and this has went on a week and causing me extreme distress. I shouldn’t be forced to do this I googled it and people simply showed they had x mental health issue and that was enough. Doesn’t matter if someone on a forum thinks it’s not valid. Problem is it’s getting that letter or medical summary and I’m sure the doctor can’t refuse to print one off a medical summary the fact they are dragging it out is adding to the stress.

In which case only the judge can decide when you present the information. You may be entitiled to the information, but i'm sure it's at the low end of their duties to get these reports produced. Now you're saying they have refused rather than delayed, which is it?

Basically they keep blaming admin issues and needs to be done with a doctor then said maybe 2 weeks. Seems they keep delaying i know others who got a medical summary at reception no issues

I’d love to do jury service.  I’m probably over the age limit now.  Interesting when we can do jury service when you’re my age (72) but the judges can be much older. :D

I was called for it when I was 22 but my employer said I was exempt and I didn’t have to do it.  I worked for the NHS in the National Blood Transfusion Service (as it was called back then) and this was considered part of the emergency services.   On the day my jury service was supposed to happen the court phoned me to find out why I hadn’t turned up. I explained and the court was happy and marked me down as exempt.  So I never got called again.

Worse thing you can do is just not turn up - you should at least communicate with the courts.

I did coroners jury duty a few years back and 2 warrants got issued on day 1 for none attendees

The maximum age for jury service is 75.

Judges have a statutory retirement age which is also 75 (it was 70 until March 2021)

No upper age limit in Scotland. I was called for jury duty at 77.

If over 71 you can decline.

It's 75 these days, went up in 2016. Its the same as the statutory retirement age for judges

Over 70s can apply for exemption if they feel they aren't medically fit enough.
