Windows Condensation

  • Similar here - 1930s house, timber suspended floors, CWI and DG, but... there's a chimney in the sitting room, albeit now with a wood burner.
On windy days, the draught coming in around the sitting room door is quite something to behold, and we find it noticeably harder to heat on these windy days, than on noticeably colder-but-still days.
But, very little condensation issue, even tho' we also dry our clothes inside. Some cond along pane bottoms at times, quickly dealt with.
Son comes home and shuts his bedroom windows fully - panes running with condensation every morning...

You need to fill the gap between skirting & floor. Then put a layer of woodfibre laminate underlay down across the entire floor. With a foam underlay & carpet, the room will instantly feel warmer, and be much easier to heat.

Treasure the moments that you have. Savour them for as long as you can for they will never come back again.

I did that in my old 1920s house east facing bathroom. Filled the gaps with papier mache (pre all these tubes of stuff) and it make a huge difference.
But again, condensation only began on the North facing rooms the more I made them draft proof.

Now double glazed, seals all done there is condensation in the North facing rooms when it's cold. Very open site that side, again. Bedrooms so it is probably something to live with. Shame as I was hoping to escape that with DG.
But I agree, just get equiped to deal with it.
These dehumidifying pots of gel do work a bit but I found I had to empty those as well as mop up a bit less condensation.

I can rise and shine - just not at the same time!

viral kindness .....kindness is contageous pass it on

The only normal people you know are the ones you don’t know very well

  • Our house is from 1988, timber frame with facing brick skin.   We have zero problems with condensation.

The walls, ceilings and floors are well insulated., well above what was required back in 1988.  These days things have moved on, but we are still well insulated, with 200 mm in the loft and 100mm under floor.  We could add more if we wanted.  We have decided not to as too much disruption for us.

We are ok with the present situation, for a 5 bed home of 280 sq m  our spend even at today’s prices, on fuel ,  is more than covered by what we get from the FIT for our solar panels, installed in 2011.

We have extractors in all bathrooms and kitchens , yes we have 2 kitchens as we have a granny flat, we do not dry washing on radiators, we use a tumble dryer, so minimal moisture inside.

We have vents in the top of the windows, but keep them closed in winter, our double glazing is old and not so thick as these days, but even so……no condensation anywhere.
