There is a house down the end of my road where they constructed a fence out of concrete posts & gravel boards (some 2m high). Whilst not pretty, I wouldn't say it is 'orrible. Growing some climbers over it would soften the lines (just not russian vine, ivy, or virginia creeper).

I think concrete fence posts are a good option, especially given the life span of fence posts now (without all the good preservatives in). As an option you could use concrete posts and then infill with 8x2 treated timber to give you a horizontal fence. Horizontal fences seem quite popular at the moment.
Some people don't exaggerate........... They just remember big!
  • A ball hitting a concrete fence is hardly going to be silent. You could spend a lot of money to get something which in practice is no better than what you have now.

Do you actually need a fence? How about something like a laurel hedge instead?
  • I also like the Durapost system mentioned above. I have powdered metal posts (much slimmer and more attractive than concrete) that are available in a few different colours. They have matching composite gravel boards which can be stacked. I have two rows of gravel boards with a wooden fence on top, bit you can make the fence entirely from gravel boards if you wish.

Laurel is fast growing, and requires regular pruning (preferably at ground level). Once established, it is next to impossible to get rid of. You also need a lot of space for a decent thickness (1-2m). Laurel, like leylandii, it totally unsuitable for the average garden.

  • Just let them bust a fence panel. After you've presented them with the replacement cost of the first one they break it might all go quiet for a while.
