Online help games for Dyslexia

Options
Hi

My 8 year old son has just been diagnosed with Dyslexia after me questioning this for 2 years.

I am happy at least to know that he can now get the help that he needs and am sure that he will go from strength to strength now.

I would like to know if there are any web sites that maybe have games etc that would help him at home.

He is keen to use the computer but gets quite frustrated when he cannot do things.

I am sorry I don't have any specific advice for online games. I was at a conference a few weeks ago which was about using technology to support children with special needs. One thing that really impressed me was software that reads internet pages. It costs just £22 and is very simple to use.Pm if you are interested and I will give you more details.

I will rise to the challenge of trying to find some games for you.though. I work for a service that supports children with special needs. As part of my remit I source and try out with children internet educational interent sites. If I find something good I will get back to you.

To support your son's reading, I would highly recoomend a site called https://www.starfall.com. It has online reading books and games. The reading books are animated, and do fun things if you click on the pictures! There are some games on this site. Do try the snowman! They also do printed material to download.

    Thanks Prudent

The https://www.starfall.com site is great and not only is my 8 year old loving it but my 3 and 6 year are also.

This is really what I am looking for something that is fun but educational as well.

Thanks for that and any more suggestions that may come up.

    Prudent,

Thank you so much for posting the link to starfall.com.

My five year old lacks confidence with reading and gets upset when we try to work with him as he really believes he won't be able to do it (even though he usually does in the end). It was so lovely to watch him sounding out the words with a big smile on his face.

It is so lovely to hear of children learning and enjoying this site. I have demonstrated it to staff in a number of schools over the past few months and several teachers have said to me how much the children enjoy it.

We are on holiday soon, I will put together and post a list of my favourite sites for educational games then, though I have still to find any specifically for dyslexia.

If your children are enjoying online stories, could I recommend the website of Priorywoods school? The 'Sleepy Farmer' story is especially popular with the children I work with. If you are stuck for holiday activities, try making the peppermint creams by following the story online. One group that I work with have said that this was their favourite activity of the year.
