Temporary claim for Carers allowance

Options
I have searched and can't find the answer to my question.

I am due to have an operation at the end of this week which will mean that I am unable to walk for 6 to 8 weeks, and then another 6 weeks of minimal walking, so will need a carer at all times.  Dh has managed to get carers leave for the first week and will then do job share (working 2 days a week) until Christmas - this will result in a sizeable reduction of his wages - I have searched but can't find an answer - is he able to claim carers allowance for this time, until I am back mobile and he returns to his normal working shifts as this would help greatly.
Thanks

    The person you care for

The person you care for must already get one of these benefits:

    • Personal Independence Payment - daily living component
    • Disability Living Allowance - the middle or highest care rate
    • Attendance Allowance
    • Constant Attendance Allowance at or above the normal maximum rate with an Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit
    • Constant Attendance Allowance at the basic (full day) rate with a War Disablement Pension
    • Armed Forces Independence Payment
    • Child Disability Payment - the middle or highest care rate
    • Adult Disability Payment - daily living component at the standard or enhanced rate
As long as you get one of those benefits he can claim CA, if you don't then he can't.

The person being cared for needs to be in receipt of a qualifying disability benefit before someone can claim carers allowance for looking after them.

Given you're expected to make a full recovery in twelve weeks (unless you are already in receipt of one) you won't qualify for a disability benefit, ergo he won't be able to claim carers allowance
  • You could check whether you'd be eligible for any UC to top up your husband's wages / household income.
Don't put down about caring or having a health condition in a benefits calculator though unless you are already claiming a disability benefit or have a long-term health condition, because if having the operation is the only reason for being temporarily incapacitated you won't qualify for any of the extra elements.
