Just bought an EV and switched to Octopus Energy. What will be the best tariff? Will need charge say every 10-15 days. electricity that we can consume at night will be dishwasher and washing machine.

  • If you have a compatible car or charge point then Intelligent Octopus Go is probably the best option
  • I'm on intelligent Go but if you are only charging once every 10-15 days I would calculate total charge time at std rate versus that at reduced rate and any savings from dishwasher etc.
Then compare that saving to fixing which will give you lower rates during the std hours.I charge 350-400 kwh a month but sounds like you will be less than 100 most month.
Other providers also offer EV charging at various times so not only off peak as I know someone that charges during the day and pays Peak rate but gets a rebate so look around to see if Octopus is right for you.

  • I charge my EV on the Agile tariff, ideally when the price is negative, so I get paid to fill up, but I'd never pay more than 9p/kWh, except in a real emergency (which has not yet occurred).

Intelligent Octopus also gives daytime charges at off peak rate. I rarely charge overnight (greener day) As daytime save a lot more as easier to add extra home use while car is charging. Rather than schedule overnight.

Smaller charges more often may work well for you, rather than running low & charging back up, but depends on car.

That's how I operate too. Used to be on Intelligent Octopus but so far have found Agile works for me with my mileage and car range and ability to delay charging as well as flexible usage at home.
