Advice- Novice putting up a kitchen wall cupboard safely!

Options
Hi everyone.

I've bought a Wickes kitchen MDF wall cupboard (600mm x 720mm type) that apparently comes with all the stuff needed for mounting it on the wall.

I am needing to put up on the wall above my fridge freezer against the inside (obviously!) of the back wall of my house (stone- all that black crumbly gritty stuff comes out when you drill into it). My previous handyman's not answering my calls, so I just got an itemised quote from another who I'd asked about other tasks but for this task wants to charge £60 for putting it up. Since the cupboard only cost about £95, I can't really justify that!

I looked up instructions about putting up wall cupboards and on the Wickes website it says to draw the shape of the back of the cupboard on the wall, (using a spirit level), mark on the bracket areas, mark the holes in the brackets, and then just drill the holes.

Is it really that easy?

I have a hammer drill which I haven't tamed yet, I know with a hammer drill you are supposed to use a smaller drill bit than you would with a normal drill  for the rawl plug size, or hole in wall might be too huge and chunks of plaster might go flying (mishap when trying to attach bookcase to wall last time) but is there anything else I should be aware of before I bring the plaster down on my head? Or indeed the cupboard?

I'll be able to find a friend to help me lift the cupboard up onto the brackets, but don't have DIY-confident friends who can do the scary drilling for me!
Thanks for any advice!

What Wicks says is true and yes it is that easy

I’m 83 and done a few kitchen in my time

I helped my grandson to extend his kitchen last week dot and dab on a block work  wall

We used 100mm frame fixers also from Wicks
  • The problem is if the stone crumbles. Drilling and plugging a solid wall is easy. If it's very uneven, or if the holes crumble to large ones it complicates matters, but it's still doable by plugging with timber, or plugging compound. The other thing with kitchen brackets is the unit usually drops onto the brackets, I did a kitchen with a very low ceiling once and couldn't use brackets provided because no clearance - I mention this because you said above a F/F which means it might be high.

  • Thanks all for the above.
I will give it a go then, the Fridge Freezer isn't that huge so hopefully it's just the curtain pole I have to avoid when putting it on the brackets.
If it turns out crooked I'll just blame the walls.
    Thanks all!
