Tek screw help

Hi, we are having a composite gate installed by our usual fence bloke, but he's never done one before.

Originally we were going to have concrete posts with a 4x4 timber to take the gate, but when the gate was delivered it's approx 35kgs! So we are going with the durapost :

https://www.wickes.co.uk/DuraPost-Steel-Anthracite-Grey-Corner-Gate-Fence-Post---75-x-75-x-2400mm/p/249716?_br_psugg_q=durapost

We will have to use tek screws, but I'm going cross eyed googling. The hinge plate is 4mm and the durapost is 2mm.

I know the self drilling bit has to clear the metal, so would a 5.5 x 19mm pancake head be enough to hold the weight. The U channel needs to be attached to the other side of the post to accommodate the composite panels the U channel is 1-1.5mm so I could use the same 5.5mm x19mm for this as well?

Any suggestions would be gratefully received. Thanks.

35kg isn't too much for a timber gate post. Did the contractor tell you it was?

I'd suggest k buying  a bigger post to keep it simple unless you like the look of Duraposts

It should be easy to get a bigger post from whoever was supplying the 4x4.

Charlton Gates are respected in the trade.. these are their recommendations.

  • Hi thanks for your reply. No the contractor didn't say the timber wouldn't hold it. We didn't realise that you could get steel posts. We got the composite fencing so we wouldn't have any maintenance. This new gate with fencing is at the side of our drive.

As we are in our 70's we decided to go with the metal post as it would last longer and not need any maintenance as a piece of timber would. Plus it would looked nicer.

When I contacted the supplier of the gate :

    https://www.ecofencing.net/products/eco-woodgrain-gates/20/

They recommended the durapost and tek fixings as others who bought their product had used them.
  • Stuart at ProperDiy recently installed a fence using Durapost; his vids might help
