Car total loss but V5 has wrong address!

Car total loss but V5 has wrong address!

My car has been written off due to an accident. The insurance company has asked for the V5 but I've now realised I never changed the address to my current one. However, it is an address I have full access to, just not where I live or where the car is kept. The address on my insurance and the licence are correct.

Am I in danger of invalidating my insurance or getting in trouble?

It might prompt additional inquiries. The insurance company will want to know that the address you were living at and letting the car at was the address that you told them you'd be living at and keeping the car at. A wrong address on the V5C doesn't help with that - but presumably you have other evidence to show where you were living if you need it?

However forgetting to update the address on the registration document would not in itself be a reason for the insurer to decline a claim.

They want the V5 because after writing it off they are the owner and need it to send it into auction. It's very unlikely they'll notice or care if the address is old, especially if it's somewhere you can still be reached.

I don't believe the V5 address is relevant to anything insurance wise, though they may be concerned that the car normally stays there and not where you told them it was. Just send them it and worry about it if they ask any questions.
  • The important thing about the V5C address is that you can be contacted via it in a timely manner. It sounds as if you can, so that angle's fine.

If the address on it is in a higher-risk area, then insurers may suspect you're fibbing to reduce your premiums - you can, I presume, prove where you actually live.

As others have said, it may raise questions on where the OP really lives and where the vehicle is kept when not being driven. It may or may not be noticed, they may do a quick check on the rating factor for the postcode -v- the one they have on file. If the V5C is at a much cheaper insurance priced area then they will ask for evidence of where the OP lives/ to prove they dont live where the vehicle is registered.
