website design cost

thank you in advance,
have been wanting to get a website for my business, nothing major or complicated, essentially for advertising.
I got  a quote for 1500 total ( including VAT)
has anyone any experience rough costs and would a DIY website make a decent enough one?

thanks again

Website can go from a static html page, to advanced interactive websites with a professional look & feel.  Then you might want to consider a domain name, and how you should host the website such that it can handle the expected number of visitors.  I don't know what your £1500 includes but for the reasons I've stated, there can be huge variations in costs.

Shop around your competitors’ websites. See if you can spot the DIY ones!

In some lines of business it’s fine to have an essentially static website that confirms you exist. In others, you need to keep information up to date to look credible, and that implies an overhead of time and skill.  In some markets a Facebook presence is more common and easier to maintain because informality is expected.

  • From free AI generated static HTML hanged on free host proivder to multi million pounds projects like Facebbok etc.

I don't think the cost is too high - £1200 is like 2-3 days of work for a web developer in UK.

What do you have already? A brand? Logo? Colour schemes? Are you wanting it to be a static "brochureware" site? Want to be able to edit it yourself or add content easily? Do you have the content ready or expecting them to do it?

£1,250 is the sort of money on a basic site where the logo already exists and it'll be customising a template for 2-3 days inc the initial discussions, designs, making the website, testing links all functioning properly etc, putting in tracking, initial submissions to search engines and making limited changes after showing you.

DIY can be ok as long as you're happy buying a design that thousands of others are using.

    To give you a comparison...

They paid a design agency over $1m to go from the bottom logo to the top logo. The cost of redoing the website, stationary etc etc was on top of that. In fairness to the design agency, it included surveying a significant number of executives, employees, existing customers and target customers about the brand, its future etc etc
  • If you’re considering a DIY approach, there are many user-friendly platforms like WordPress, Wix, or Squarespace that can help

If you have a bit of time on your hands, a logo, a colour scheme and your content ready and don't want something too complicated, you can try to built it yourself. I did use Wix, took a bit of getting used to but I am pleased with the result for the price and I have full control when I want to change something or add some content or pages.
  • I=I've been providing web design services for many years, but I have never developed a custom-coded HTML website for any client.

Based on my experience, I recommend setting up a WordPress-based website. It allows you to own a website that is always up-to-date, secure, and open to enhancements.
