The huge problem with both these recent cases is that they were just 2 weeks away from their Policy renewing.

So not enough time to sort out what it is. And when the new Policy has to be taken out, one very often gets asked if there is any cracking in the Home.

People have encountered problems if they have not reported cracking and an Insurance Company finds out.

At this stage you may not even be sure if your Current Insurer is going to offer you a new Policy, even if you have not made a claim.

So I agree dunstonh, when you have sufficient time left on a Policy, you can hopefully get the required advice to make an informed decision what best to do.

But 2 weeks before a Policy renewal is due is cutting it too fine and one risks not having a Policy in place.

(From experience, it is also not that easy for a homeowner to find their own Expert these days and not at such short notice.)

Edit: Please see the other Post at the end regarding getting the CUE corrected if necessary, if it turns out not to be Subsidence.

Stepped cracks are not necessarly an issue.  its the size of the crack that matters and knowing why it happened.  Cracks mirrored on internal and external in the same area are more concerning than cracks appearing just internally or just externally.
