Do I have any rights / comeback?

I bought a second hand BMW X1 automatic last March and in August this year I was getting an engine management light. I took it to BMW and they’ve said it needs a full new gearbox and will cost more than £10,000 to fix. Although it is second hand (bought from a car dealership) it is only a 2018 model and has less than 55,000 miles. Seems crazy to me that a car now worth approx £12k needs over £10k worth of work and I am solely responsible despite the car not being old or have many miles considering. Do I have any rights with BMW or the car dealership? Any advice or help would be massively appreciated.

How long was the guarantee the dealer supplied, what did it cover, and was it mileage limited? What mileage did you do in the car? These are the questions which immediately occur to me reading your post.Secondly, going to a BMW dealer is going to be the most expensive repair option. Manu of us avoid going inside dealerships, and we don't particularly want to. Last time I did, they asked me to move my car around to the rear of the showroom!“Take back control” Boycott self-checkouts and check your supermarket's hygiene score!1

It does sound like you've been terribly unlucky here. I don't think you can say that the gearbox was faulty at the time of purchase, so you'd have no claim under the Consumer Rights Act.Do a web search for "bmw specialist gearbox replacement". I think you could get the gearbox replaced for under £3500. Whilst this isn't a small amount of money, it's a lot better than the £10k from your dealer

Find a recommended BMW specialist and get a second opinion. Some of these guys can work wonders.1

Concur with taking it literally anywhere other than BMW directly.
Getting an astronomical quote direct from the main dealership (especially a flashy one like BMW), water is wet.
Would also be good to get a second opinion on the issue.Know what you don't1 -
