Sending a tactical knife from UK to USA, is this illegal?

I was going to risk sending it, but later found out it was a survival hunting knife and I didn't want to take any chances so I handed it into my local police station. It's a small local station, so I think it went alright. They sent a letter saying it would be destroyed if the original owner doesn't get in touch- I sent the seller a copy of the letter.
I just feel bad that he has lost £200.
