Car insurance- 2nd driver now passed driving test

My wife and I have a car insurance where she is a 2nd driver under a provisional driving license.

She's now passed her driving test so I rang my insurance provider about the change but they said they can't give me a new quote as she is now a new driver.

Which is cheaper? Or is there another option?

1. Cancel my insurance early and get a new one with her details updated (not sure what costs I will incur for cancelling early)
2. Simply get her a separate insurance. Is it allowed to have to separate car insurance for the same car??

You need to get quotes to find out which is going to be cheaper for your circumstances

On option 2 it depends what type of policy you are buying... there are "top up" policies explicitly designed for new/young drivers and these effectively are only in place when she is driving and when the vehicle is parked/unattended etc its covered by your full policy.

There is nothing against the law about having two full policies on a vehicle at the same time but it at a minimum could cause delays in processing a claim eg if the car his hit whilst parked then the two insurers would nut it out to determine which should pay or how the costs should be shared especially as she'll have a higher excess by being an inexperienced driver.
