Some awful landlords about

This is purely for interest as it's all over and done now but wondering what they COULD have done?
I have two very nice tenants in my rental, they've been there a year and look after the place nicely. They are Romanian and their English isn't the best and their previous landlord clearly knew that they didn't understand the law, because after they moved in to mine they showed me video of the landlord ripping out kitchen and bathroom items in their previous flat because he wanted to 'do it up' to sell it and had just given them notice to quit! So of course, they left as soon as they could find a place because he had made their flat temporarily uninhabitable
But what would have been the situation if they had been clearly knowledgable of the rental laws and came home one day to find this happening?
Again - I'm just curious, it's all in the past now and they are happy where they are

Tenants have rights about when the landlord is permitted to enter the property...and tenants are getting more rights this year. But in the moment, the tenant just panics and needs to find a new home to settle in.What the old landlord did is highly immoral and I wonder to what extent it is criminal

Have the tenants suffered a material loss, e.g. paying double rent, because of the eviction. If so, then it may be worth looking into claiming that from the landlord.0

They could have refused entry and sat in the flat for possibly a 6 months/year, waiting on full eviction.
Or around 6 months if they stop paying rent.
If the LL had gained entry illegally they they could have called the police. Then took legal action. This would probably delay eviction
If the LL has not registered the deposit properly they can get another few pounds from that.
They could have extorted money from the landlord in exchange for leaving promptly / early.0 -
