Not an item but I once saw a charity shop where the books were arranged by "female authors" and "male authors" . I did look to see if there were any George Eliots as was wondering where they would put her novels.
or indeed Acton, Currer or Ellis Bell- but then, they would be worth a fortune. or George Sand .....

We parked for free yesterday near the town bowling green where there was a match in progress. Shortly afterwards we were in the charity shop when one of the players dashed in and asked if they had a belt because his had broken and his trousers kept falling down as he bowled. He was a skinny chap, the men’s belts were too large, but they found him a ladies’ belt for £2.50.

Is a man's belt actually different from a ladies belt?

  • What an odd question @Grumpy_chap, ladies’ belts are in another part of the charity shop with women’s clothes. They are usually smaller and thinner, and they are often fashion items, brightly coloured and decorative rather than functional. When there is a bewildering choice, such as three tins in a cupboard, most men cannot find the item for which they are searching. The sensible woman realised that the man was in a panic and found him a ladies’ plain belt to meet his needs.

Don't you just thread it the other way?

It would appear as though you have had the pleasure to encounter some of the very best examples of the male  of the species.  I struggle to select the correct item from a choice of one ;)

  • I once came across a copy of The Poisonwood Bible on a CS Religion shelf. In case you’re wondering , DH enjoys philosophy and philosophy books are sometimes found in the Religion sections. I often wondered if anyone bought the book, read it and abandoned Religion!
  • I “found” the most delightful young volunteer in our heart charity shop, who told me about his passion for designing and sewing gothic dresses while we examined the vintage jewellery. Later there were some students, on work experience, I think, organising the non-fiction books, causing a lot of chuckles. It is the people who make a good charity shop.
