Bought dvd tv series - it's very obviously pirate, what to do?

I bought an old BBC tv series on dvd from foundthatfilm.co.uk

Paid £35,  by PayPal.

It is very obviously a pirate copy,  a recording of the programmes being shown on a TV screen,   poor images and awful sound,   badly photocopied sleeve, white paper labels on the discs.

Obviously I'm going to email for a refund,  but I'm assuming they won't respond.
Will PayPal refund for counterfeit goods?

I try not to get too stressed out on the forum. I won't argue, i'll just leave a thread if you don't like what I say. :)

I've had a look at the website and it really is dodgy.    I can see TV shows on there that have never been released on DVD so are obviously pirate and made themselves.

It wouldn't be so bad if they made it clear about the quality on the page with the DVD but they don't, it reads as if they are legitimate DVDs.

I've had counterfeit goods through Paypal before and I got my money back, this is a few years ago though.    If I were you I would also reported them to FACT as well (I would also complain to however hosts their domain but that's probably just me).

I have never used them and probably never will.

But I didn't read their site as claiming that these are legitimate (retail, commercially produced) DVDs. Quite the opposite in fact, they claim their business model is finding and supplying material which has never previously been available on DVD.

They state prominently on their landing page:

'All films on foundthatfilm.co.uk have never been released on dvd & are currently in the public domain. All items come complete with top quality dvd with full disc print, high quality clear case & high gloss artwork.

I agree there might be a little stretching of the truth about their claim that  'our aim at foundthatfilms.co.uk is to provide hard to find films with the quality of our products being the main PRIORITY!

@easy I think you were rather brave handing over money to such a dodgy website!! No address, no contact number...

As you paid by PayPal then open a "not as described" dispute and you will then have to spend a few £ paying for tracked delivery to return it.

The reviews for this company are very negative  and complaining about counterfeit. The positive review says that if you read the descriptions clearly you know what you're getting" e.g. counterfeit!!

As above, lots of these series were never on DVD so are not going to be genuine.
Should've = Should HAVE (not 'of')
Would've = Would HAVE (not 'of')

No, I am not perfect, but yes I do judge people on their use of basic English language. If you didn't know the above, then learn it! (If English is your second language, then you are forgiven!)

The first paragraph explains what you are getting, the clue is that these were never released on DVD therefore they have to be copies of a taped show and converted, so quality is going to be appalling.

Please bare in mind:- All films on foundthatfilm.co.uk have never been released on dvd & are currently in the public domain. All items come complete with top quality dvd with full disc print, high quality clear case & high gloss artwork

  • I'm very used to digital copies of TV shows that were never released (I'm not recommending or advocating anything, here) which are usually ripped from when the programme was broadcast or later repeated - but VHS can also be digitised.  These tend to be 480p, not great quality but passable.  Audio quality ranges from 'meh' to decent but again, passable at least.

From the description given, that's what I'd expect to be on the DVDs.  Not a recording of the TV itself.

Think that should read off the TV itself.

No, I typed what I intended, as the OP describes "a recording of the programmes being shown on a TV screen".

I'm not sure on the legalities on this. The whole public domain issue has lots of caveats. Although having a quick look at the website I can see plenty of offerings that are nowhere near public domain. The OP's description of the product received doesn't match the description of the product anyway. "Bad quality photocopy" is not "high gloss artwork".

Ask for a refund and for the seller to pay return postage, as is your right for not as described. Failing that contact Paypal. After that, contact Trading Standards.
