Apple MacBook Air

Any advice I purchased a MacBook Air in 2020 for £1125 from John Lewis it has now gone wrong .  Apple gave me 2 options for repair both worked out at about £450 . John Lewis no help either . Apple think the logic board has gone  . I can’t afford it and now have a useless piece of equipment sitting at home . Is there anything I can do I. So annoyed and angry has only lasted 4 years ?thanks

  • That’s unusual for a MacBook, they’re a pretty robust build and not designed to be obsolete quickly like some other brands, so you’ve been unlucky. When you say ‘gone wrong’ has someone at JL or Apple looked at it or have you described the issue to them only?

  • What do you mean by "John Lewis is no help either"?  What exactly did they say?  Did they ask you to get it inspected to diagnose the fault, by any chance?
  • Is the MacBook used for personal or business?

So 4 years will be well out of Apple warranty, so their charge is pretty fair.

JL often offer 5 year warranty, was this the case on this purchase. You would need to dig you paperwork out to check T/C etc.

£450 is too cheap for replacing the logic board, though apple do waive their labour fairly liberally.

Your "rights" are with the company you bought from, JL use a 6 year model, assuming your in England/Wales, so even if you were to successfully argue it wasnt sufficiently durable you'd get 2/6ths of the original purchase price given that is less than £450... they'll actually work it out in months rather than years.

To argue your rights you will almost certainly need an engineers report on what has actually gone wrong and them to opine on either if it was an inherent fault or if the item was insufficiently durable. The cost of the report can be added to the value of your claim if it's successful.

I have my Macbook for almost 8 years, all good. It is very unusual for those devices to break so quick. Sorry that happened to you. I use it a lot for my uni, so really a lot. To send and receive things from https://stateofwriting.com/uk/thesis-writing-service for example. Which is super important for my college and my future diploma.
