Windscreen crack

I am getting ready to sell my old car and then I notice a crack right at the bottom of my windscreen! This must have been caused by a stone on the road.
Do I repair this privately or do I tell my insurer and pay £25 excess and then get it repaired at their approved company? I really really do not want my premium to increase next year.

If it can be repaired, then going through your insurer should not affect your NCB and many policies have zero excess.

If yours has a £25 excess, that should still be cheaper than arranging it yourself
  • This is what the policy says.

Approved Repairer Glass Repair Market value
Non Approved Repairer Glass Repair £25 per claim
The above limits for Glass apply after you have paid your excess

    Glass repair excess
    Approved repairer £25
    Non-approved repairer £150

A repair would be for a small stone chip and would cost you £25 if you let the insurer sort it.

If it is cracked as you state you will need a replacement so you are looking at the £150 excess if you let the insurer handle it.

If the car was selling for a few thousand I would probably get it repaired first. If you are selling it for a few hundred I would not bother and let the new keeper decide whether to fix it.

If it's a chip Asda and Amazon sell a DIY resin repair kit for about £7 that is enough to do around 5 repairs and works well if all instructions are followed.
  • The car will sell exactly for a grand.
The crack looks like this :

Driving round Australia, we were given little 'stickers' to put on chips on the windscreen.
We had 4 in 10 weeks compared to 1 in twenty years in the UK.
Although it was the little git who put his foot through the windscreen of the camper that cracked it.
May you find your sister soon Helli.
    Sleep well.
