  • The median is the figure in the middle of a distribution.  Removing a chunk at the bottom and a chunk at the top isn't necessarily going to influence the median, not at all if it's the same percentage at each end.

    From memory it is not the same at each end, the bottom is usage below a threshold, I can see that Ofgem mention the threshold but I cannot see what the threshold was last time, it also seems to vary. Extrapolating from what I can see (I am on my phone, having a break in the middle of a 30km jog), it looks like any usage below 800kWh annually was not counted. The upper bounds seems equally vague, there only seems to be mention of removing "very high users" to avoid skewing figures, but no mention of what that figure is in kWh.
  • If you're taking a median then removing low and high outliers should not be necessary, unless you have a lot more of one than the other.
