My son and partner are renting a bungalow which is in a rather poor condition. When they viewed the property they were advised that it would be cleaned, the sockets repaired, the rubbish removed, the kitchen cupboards repaired and other bits and bobs.
When I was renting 5 years ago, I was shown properties in a similar condition to the above. I always thanked the agent or landlord and asked them to give me a call once the work had been done so I could have a second viewing. No-one ever called back. DON'T TRUST someone who says they will fix it!! WHY are they SHOWING a property in such a state? If they ever had the intention of doing it up, surely thery'd have done it before they started marketing it?
I agree, call the council inspectors in pronto!!!! Good luck, I hope they can get out of there soon.0 -
My previous council would not pay my deposit unless the landlord provided a valid gas and electric certifacate. I had to leave my temporary accomadation due to personal reasons and the only help I was offered was to go private and the council I was with then to pay the deposit. My landlord told me it cost him nearly £300 to get this done. Whether thats the truth or not I dont know but I know it was done through British Gas who are not cheap. I could not move in on my moving in date as the boiler was faulty and I had to wait to get the all clear and certifacate before i could move in. It was only delayed by 2 days but Im glad I now know that in future when I move , I will request to see both gas and electric whether its legal or not.0

Thankyou all for replying to my queries. Unfortunately my son and partner had to make a very quick decision as their previous landlord was anxious to know whether they wished to remain for a further six months; their decision was therefore based on haste as there was little time between giving in their notice and locating a new property. They are both trusting people and relied on the Landlord to carry out the repairs as he had verbally promised. I am however extremely grateful for all the tips and advice offered and will be passing these to my son in the hope that they can encourage the Landlord to fulfil his promises and deal with the necessary repairs.0

I am in a rented bungalow too and it has terrible rising damp in the bedrooms. The landlord refuses to admit it is damp and says it is condensation. I am scared to go to local authority who would no doubt make the landlord do the work as, knowing my landlord, he would find some way to give me notce. For many reasons I know it would be very difficult if not impossible to find anything else to rent so dont want to take the risk.0
