I was in traffic about a month ago and I smelt a burning smell and the AC hasnt worked since, it doesnt give an error but it just doesnt make the air cold anymore. I took it to a garage today, they said it still had gas in it and they have checked fuses and other bits and have concluded that it is the aircon compressor that is broken. They quoted me £450 supply and fit. Is there anything I can do to reduce that cost? Do they do reconditioned compressors? Anyone got any thoughts on how to get it fixed as cheaply as possible?
Thanks

As it's still gassed I suspect the clutch on the compressor has burnt out.
There's a electromagnetic clutch that engages and disengages the compressor from the pulley/belt when the air con is turned on and off, so it doesn't spin the compressor all the time the engine is running, only when the air con it turned on.
You can hear it clonk or clunk sometimes, just as you switch the air con on.
There is a cut out on them, if the system is low on gas they would engage.
So if gas pressure is good yet it won't engage the clutch, it's the clutch that's the problem (or power too it).
Most air con compress clutches are replaceable for a lot less than replacing the whole unit.
Ford do list air con clutches for most of their models.
Have you tried a indie air con specialist?

Thanks for the responses, I think I could save parts cost by just buying the clutch but this would increase labour costs so would probably end up costing similar. I have got another 2 estimates for the work and both were more expensive so I have decided to bite the bullet and pay the money. Thanks for the thoughts though.0
