5 Year Old Peugeot Needs New Engine!!

Hi,
We are a young family and after doing lots of research (and lots of saving) we decided on purchasing the 5008. We bought a 2019 model in September 2021 direct from a Peugeot dealership. We paid £23,000 for the car with the hope that this car will last our family for the next 10 years. We have had the car serviced every 10,000 miles and the mileage is now 68,000. At the beginning of July the car completely stopped working with no warning. It needed full diagnostics at Peugeot and they have said it needs a new engine. The total cost of diagnostics and new engine is £11,700!! The car is now currently worth £13,000! I have gone back and forth with customer care and they are now contributing £5,000 towards this but I have still been left with a bill of £6,700! We are devastated- this is all our savings and we are having to borrow from a relative. We have been told by the dealership that it is just bad luck but I cannot accept this.

Can anyone share any advice on what else they think I can do? I really feel I at least need some compensation for not having a car for the last 2 months and the amounts I have paid on car hire.

If I had £11,000 in the bank to splash out on my car, I can promise you I wouldn't be driving a Peugeot!!!

  • Give us a clue, what did they say the failure was?

Was it serviced at a Peugeot dealership?

So car is well out of warranty.
So getting a £5K contribution is very nice.

    I would post here

    https://www.peugeotforums.com/forums/

Asking if anyone else has had this issue & did they get this resolved due to known issue with the engine.

You could also go to a 3rd party garage & get a recon engine which would be far less.

The OP needs to know the specific issues with the engine and then, as suggested by born_again, post on the forum listed to see if it's a known problem.  Even then I wouldn't hold out much hope.  There was a period of about 2 years where certain Renault engines were known to have a design fault.  It was well documented by Renault but they still refuse to pay out, even to those whose vehicles were serviced by Renault Dealerships.

    Why so many exclamation marks?
  • Given the use of past tense, this sounds like a done deal.  The diagnosis is complete and the engine replaced, so you're looking at trying to negotiate more contribution from the dealer.  Is that right?
