Barclaycard. The oddest application I’ve ever made.

I applied mid August for 0% balance transfer card at the end of the online application a message said we need to make further checks and will get back to you within 5 working days.

Three weeks later, nothing.

I’ve phoned them three times and had a lengthy ‘chat’ online, each one ending with some generic phrases about what to do if/when I receive my offer which would be ‘in the next few days’. I was told it had been referred and therefore there is no time limit for a decision. Three weeks?!

Why don’t they just tell me yes or no!? Never known a credit card application to take so long with no confirmation, time frame, or decision.

Guess it’s time to ditch/switch the current account and savings account and wash my hands of them.

I was a good 6 months to get my Barclaycard sorted.  When I went in to a Barclays branch to sort it out in person, there was a queue of people complaining about different things.  I'm keeping my Barclaycard but no amount of Avios can tempt me to move my banking to them.

Summer holidays. Underwriters on holiday. Catching up with work backlog.
  • Still……….nothing heard 4 weeks after application. Must still be ‘on summer holidays’
  • Two months after initial application and being referred I’ve been offered a credit card albeit with 31.9% interest rate, much higher than the original offer. They won’t tell me the credit limit until or if I opt to accept their offer! I accepted it over a week ago and still no card received or any other notification received. Hard search on my credit report recorded.

In contrast I took out 0% cc with another bank a few weeks ago, applied Monday, card arrived Friday of the same week! 🤭

Possibly ok if you are accepted immediately but if referred I would just abandon the application and look elsewhere, two months and counting, pah!

I had a similar thing with Nationwide. It had to be referred and then I heard nothing so went elsewhere and set it up no bother and balance all transferred then out of nowhere I got a credit into my previous credit card which had already been paid off. I think it was 3 weeks after application. I had to request a refund. I’m keeping it as it’s got a 0% purchase for so many months offer as well.

I had similar with my Barclays overdraft. They refushed to give me on, but when I spoke to them, the lady on the phone said she could not work out why (the computer said no), it was sent to an underwriter, they said no again, so I left to another bank. Very strict bank it seems for some people. Incidently I did get a barclaycard without issue but closed it due to current account issues. I have no debts apart from a mortgage, less that 50% used each month on it.

  • I sent in my acceptance two weeks ago and guess what? Nothing. The franked envelope they gave me to return it was marked Priority. What a shower.

Did it arrive in the end 👍 Didn't you sign the agreement at the end of your application.

Not ‘yet’. The application was online mid august whereupon it was referred. They won’t even tell me my credit limit without agreeing to take the card/open the account. Joke is I don’t even need it really as I applied elsewhere and got a card within five days and did balance transfers straight away. Slow and under resourced I can only presume.

Oh that’s not good.. I got an instant acceptance so hopefully it won’t be as painful.
