When does 30 years start for Plan 2 student loan if you leave at the end of Year 1?

Options
My son completed Year 1 of University and left in July 2021 deciding that it wasn't for him. He only received one year of student loan, and the student loan company were advised by the University that he had left.

He has been working but has not reached the repayment threshold since then and had been assuming that these years would count towards his 30 years. But he has received a letter saying that he is due to start making repayments from April 2024 - namely the April after he would have graduated - except he didn't, he only completed Year 1.

He wrote to SLC, emailed them and contacted via Facebook - no replies as to why his start date for the 30 years isn't April 2022 (ie. the April after he left).

What is the usual timing for students leaving at the end of the first year?

It should be the April after course completion or otherwise leaving the course for good. The university will have confirmed his withdrawal date to the SLC and it is the following 6th April that sets his statutory repayment due date.

OK - so we are correct in thinking that it should indeed be the April after the end of Year 1 then, as the university clearly notified SLC as they did not receive any more tuition loan, and he did not receive any more maintenance loan
