Removals Insurance?

Hiya,
We're in the process of buying our first home and we're looking at removals firms.
However, my stepdad has offered to hire out an 18T truck on his class 2 licence and drive it for us to save us money.
What I'm wondering is - are there any insurances which we could get to cover the goods in transit like a BAR removal firm would have in place?
Thanks in advance,
Kay

Check your Home insurance, better policies cover your goods temporarily outside of the home for the purposes of moving home.

Removal company's insurance tends to be on an indemnity basis, not new for old, and with a reasonable sized excess and so not as good as most people seem to assume compared to home insurance.

Almost certainly with the caveat of 'by professional removers'...  Read the small print of your policy, OP.

Ask an Insurance Broker?  One can get insurance for pretty much anything.  But sometimes the cost is eye-watering.

NB>  BAR insurance is often an 'extra' fee to the actual removals cost
  • Before you accept his offer, go round your current home and eyeball everything that you will want to move. Then work out how exactly you will get it out from where it is, and into where it needs to be in your new home. If you feel absolutely confident that you can do all this between you, then great. If you are in ANY doubt at all then the price for a proper removals firm will be a small price to pay! (And assuming you are moving out of a rental, also factor in the risk of damaging the property as you remove things - a large chest of drawers down a narrow staircase for example)

We paid a little under £1k for our move - got a team of 4 chaps on it and they were absolute stars from start to finish - they had the home we moved out of cleared in 3 hours, and everything loaded into the new house plus a few bits of furniture which we had agreed with our sellers that they could leave relocated for us while they were there too. Worth their weight in gold, and definitely earned their tip!

  • Lovely of your Dad to offer, but I agree with the poster above. I think paying a removal company is worth every penny.
