Air bnb damage

Options
Hi, I wondered if anyone had any experience of the process as a renter for when something gets damaged in an air bnb.
We have just been away to a lovely place, we had a great time, all 4 adults and 3 kids. The day before last a large papier mache vase got broken in the sitting room when it was moved - it was made of papier mache and the rim just came clean off. The host has sent us a bill for £500 and a link to the original which was €599.
I have many issues with this and am interested in others opinions/experiences :
-I wouldn't have a £500 vase in my house, but if I did and it got damaged I would claim on my household insurance.
- the house was not advertised as having high value decorations standing around- had it been we might have thought twice about going there with 3 kids.
- what is the limit here? If there was an accident and a patio door got damaged would we be billed 5k for a replacement?
Has anyone been through thr airbnb claim process? How did it turn out?
Thanks

I would refer the renter to pursue through their insurance arrangements for accidental damage.

To claim against you they would need to demonstrate negligence on your part.

Surely that depends on the laws of the country where the AirBnB was situated?

I don't want to claim it's a UK one given the price of the replacement is in Euros , so we may be dealing with a different legal system here

    1) What you'd have in your home is irrelevant. Home insurance in the UK has an average of a £300 excess so claiming for a £500 vase is unlikely to be economical considering the raised premiums over the next 3-5 years and even so, why should they be out of pocket? Even if they did claim their insurers could look to you to reimburse their outlay which could be €599 plus the cost of a loss adjuster

    2) Have never seen any listing state the value of the decorations, have however seen my cousin move things before allowing her kids to run riot

    3) There is no limit in the terms and conditions... AirB&B will auto-charge you up to a cap of $500 if you dont engage but says it will recover amounts over this by other means

Ultimate a lot will depend on the legal jurisdiction in which the damage was caused and how its laws work on liability, indemnity etc.

Yeah and if your cousin had moved this vase "before allowing her kids to run riot" the rim would've given way. Nope, accidents happen, this is why we have insurance.

Cheers. I think the most obvious way for host to pursue from looking at airbnb website would appear to be through airbnb and their host insurance . I was particularly wondering if anyone had experience of when this host insurance kicks in and whether the host will automatically pursue through them if we don't pay.
  • I’m quite sure they will pursue

Was it advertised as child friendly?

Do you have travel insurance? If so surely it's covered under the personal liability section?

What good would that do, then you'd just have the insurer billing you instead of the host.
